Sustainable & Energy Efficient
The integration of sustainable and energy efficient design strategies is a cornerstone of our design philosophy and practice. Sustainability is an integrated design approach using principles, products and technologies that create livable, healthy buildings and communities that minimize negative environmental impacts. Programs, budgets and funding sources often determine to what degree we can incorporate sustainable design strategies, products and technologies.
Sustainability and energy efficiency can increase initial project cost, but then tend to increase the long term value of projects both for the owners and their tenants. We have successfully worked with our clients to determine how to best invest in sustainable strategies that pay the greatest long term "dividend" to their low income tenants and to themselves as owners. At the top of the list are durability, energy efficiency and indoor air quality.
Several recent affordable housing projects have provided us the opportunity to incorporate a number of highly sustainable and innovative technologies such as:
- Passive solar heating
- Photovoltaic panels for electricity production
- Solar thermal water heaters
- Drain-water heat recovery systems
- Energy efficient electronic thermostats
- High fly ash concrete
- Sustainably harvested lumber
- Recycled glass tile accents
- Composite Decking
- Linoleum flooring
We are intimately familiar with PGE's Earth Advantage program and strive to integrate many of its standards into all of our projects.
